Be courteous

Everyone here is united by films and divided by taste, background and what they have lived through. Argue with the take, not the person. Unwelcome, aggressive, suggestive or otherwise inappropriate remarks aimed at another member have no place here, and neither does going after someone for a rating you disagree with.

No abuse, no impersonation

Do not use CineMention to abuse, harass, threaten or intimidate anyone, and do not impersonate another member or pretend to speak for the people who run it. Do not ask another member for personal or identifying information, and do not try to work it out from what they have posted.

No hate

Creativity of expression has a home here; hate does not. Do not use CineMention to promote, take part in or incite hate, violence, discrimination or intolerance — including on the grounds of race, age, gender, gender identity, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation or any other protected attribute. Content that praises or promotes those ideologies is removed whether it says so plainly or through coded language, symbols, keywords or tags.

Spoilers

Mark them. A review, a post and a debate argument each carry a spoiler flag; set it on anything that gives away significant plot, and do not unset one a moderator has set. Comments and list descriptions have no flag to set, so significant spoilers do not belong in them at all.

This one is not negotiable. People watch films at their own pace.

Write your own reviews

Do not plagiarise. If you are quoting a critic, a filmmaker or another member, say so, quote it as a quote and link to where it came from.

Do not game the numbers

• No coordinated review-bombing, and no rating a film you have not seen to move its average.
• No mass following, and no liking at volume to farm follows or likes back.
• No second account to get around a block or a suspension, and no voting twice on the same thing.
• No spam, no advertising, and no logging or reviewing a film because something else shares its title.

Film data belongs to TMDB

Titles, posters and credits are imported from TMDB. Do not make false or misleading edits there, and do not vandalise their data, knowing it will arrive here. Genuine corrections are welcome and belong on their side — Contact says how.

What happens when this is broken

• Content that is offensive, unlawful, explicit, graphic, deliberately misleading or otherwise against these rules can be removed or hidden, and it can happen without notice first.
• Behaviour somewhere else counts when it is aimed at people here.
• An account that keeps breaking these rules can be suspended or closed. The Terms of use is where that is set out.
• Report rather than answering in kind. Posts, comments, debate arguments and messages each carry a report action, and a member you would rather not see can be blocked from their profile.

This page will change

It is a living document. Behaviour, language and the ways people find around a rule all move, and this moves after them. If you think a decision made under it was wrong, say so through Contact.
